TRIP OVERVIEW

Embark on a unique weekend experience that combines the thrill of vertical descent with the serenity of camping in one of Sri Lanka’s most untouched highland areas. This two-day guided expedition takes you deep into the heart of the Knuckles Mountain Range—starting with a technical abseil down Thaliya Watuna Ella, one of the region’s tallest waterfalls, followed by an overnight camp on the remote plateau of Gombaniya.

Led by a highly experienced team—including former Air Force Special Forces, a combat medic, physiotherapist, and certified survival specialists—this experience is ideal for outdoor enthusiasts seeking a safe, well-supported adventure in Sri Lanka’s wilderness.

Full Itinerary


Day 1 – Waterfall Abseiling & Highland Camping

  • 07:00 – Departure from Kandy
  • 08:30 – Arrival at Thaliya Watuna Ella
  • 09:30 – Safety briefing, harness fitting, and start of the abseiling session

Participants descend the main section of the waterfall using ropes and belay systems under expert supervision.

  • 12:00 – Lunch served at the base or nearby rest area
  • 12:30 – Transfer to Gombaniya trailhead via 4x4 off-road vehicles (approx. 4km)
  • 13:30 – Start the hike to Gombaniya Plateau (moderate difficulty, approx. 2.5 hours)
  • 16:00 – Arrival at the camping site, tent setup, free time to relax or explore
  • 19:00 – Traditional Sri Lankan dinner served hot at the camp spot
  • 21:00 – Lights out; rest under a clear mountain sky


Day 2 – Highland Hike & Return

  • 07:00 – Breakfast served at camp
  • 08:00 – Start the descent via the scenic trail through Alakola Estate
  • 10:00 – End of hike, regroup at trailhead
  • 12:00 – Lunch en route back to Kandy
  • 14:00 – Arrival in Kandy and end of the program

What to pack


Clothing

  • 2 pairs of lightweight, long-sleeve shirts
  • 2 pairs of breathable outdoor trousers
  • Underlayers or cycling shorts to avoid friction during hiking
  • Quick-dry swimwear (for waterfall section)
  • Hat or cap for sun protection
  • Sunglasses with UV protection
  • Lightweight waterproof jacket (optional)


Footwear

  • Closed hiking shoes 
  • Additional pair of slippers or sandals for campsite use

Headlamp or torch (mandatory)

  • Insect repellent (mandatory)
  • Personal toiletries and towel
  • Reusable water bottles or hydration pack (minimum 3 liters)
  • Snacks or high-energy bars ( chocolates, nuts)
  • Sunblock (optional)
  • Hiking pole (optional)
  • Any required medication or prescriptions

 


Important Notes

  • All participants must have a reasonable fitness level and be comfortable with outdoor activities in forested terrain.
  • No prior abseiling experience is required, but comfort with heights is recommended.
  • This is a Leave No Trace experience—respect for nature and responsible behavior is expected from all participants.
  • The itinerary may be adjusted based on weather conditions or group pace.
